An unusual pet has been returned to its owner after a hot pursuit caught on police cameras last month.
Irwin, the baby red kangaroo was safely returned to his family after police officers in Durango, Colorado successfully wrangled the missing animal.
In a popular Facebook post, the Durango Police Department shared body camera footage of DPD officers Preskorn, Walters and Hamer climbing in — to save Irwin.
In the video, the officers can be seen talking to each other as the little red kangaroo jumps across an intersection and down the road.
One officer asked another out of frame, “Do you think it would be better if I just used my hands?”
She then asked, “Is there rabies?” Things will hit me.”
The body cam video then transitions the kangaroo safely off the streets of Durango and into someone’s arms.
The officers gently pet the creature and one officer offered a hand to its snout for a quick sniff.
An officer is heard saying of the kangaroo, “very gentle! Really gentle. What’s his name?”
The kangaroo is then named, with the man holding the animal saying, “Irwin, as in Steve Irwin.”
Steve Irwin, better known as the Crocodile Hunter, was from Australia where kangaroos originated.
The Durango Police Facebook post sharing the video read, “BREAKING NEWS: Our officers were in hot pursuit… of a kangaroo! Look closely…it’s a little boy.”
“No worries, the long-legged friend was released to their owner… and we are seriously reconsidering the cardio,” the post continued.
Irwin the kangaroo’s owner is unknown and little Irwin was completely unharmed during the incident. It is legal for private citizens to own kangaroos in the state of Colorado, according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
“No Roos were harmed in the filming of this video,” the Durango PD clarified in their Facebook post.
A top comment on the post simply says, “A Durangaroo!”
Durango police did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.
